Living on the premier Ring, Maximus, a brilliant engineer, hungers for more than the monotony of daily existence mandated to him by those that control the Ring. The relentless pursuit of Infinite Existence is a collective purpose assigned to all, but for Maximus, it's a hollow dream that leaves his soul yearning for its own legacy.

Determined to escape his repetitive life, Maximus seeks out a destiny that will offer his life significance. When shocking revelations about the Ring’s underbelly intertwine with the hidden truths of his own lineage, he’s propelled into action.

Fueled by a spirit passed down to him by his indomitable father, he devotes his unshakable resolve to reshape the Ring. Maximus embarks on a mission to challenge the unassailable leadership of the Rings. He’s ready to wager everything, even his own life, on liberating all those that have lived below him from the ruthless grip of their oppressors.

In this high-stakes struggle for freedom and justice, Maximus must confront not only the forces of tyranny but also the threat of losing everyone that has built him up to the man he is now. With the fate of humanity hanging in the balance, he stands poised to start a revolution that will ignite every soul that’s been lost up to this point.

Excerpt

“Humanity is gambling its entire existence on this rock, so if you want to succeed here, I'd recommend learning everything you can about this rock and staying as far away from it as you can. It’s rumored to be the primary building block for our next iteration of civilization,” the man said.

“If it’s so important, why should I stay away from it?” Peter asked.

“Look at their faces, the dredge. It becomes a part of you. Their skin grays after a few months of exposure. Their eyes deaden, and their skin shrivels,” the guard said, moving down to both knees, embracing Peter in the hands. “Existence here is suffering, nothing more, nothing less. It is, however, better than the alternative.”

“Why are you helping me?” Peter asked as he looked at the thousands of people toiling away on the asteroid. He couldn’t help but feel confused looking at the thousands of people in front of him as he pondered why he was chosen out of the stream of passengers.

“You look like someone I knew when I got off the vessel,” the man said, with eyes beginning to mist. “I’d like you to make it longer than he did.”

About The Author

I'm Ryan Skeffington and I've had a unique journey that has led me to the world of storytelling. My professional background is entrenched in the oil & gas industry but I have always been drawn to the arts, and my desire to create drives me to continuously try new things.

Writing is as much a creative outlet as it is emotional. I draw inspiration from the imagery and stories in movies, music, and anime. I explore the world by trying new things and this has led me down the rabbit hole of woodworking, photography, startups, golf, and most recently writing where I've found my voice.

Through my writing, I aim to transport you to fantastical worlds that explore the human experience.

What Do You Want Readers to Know about Lost Souls?

1. I wrote this novel as a form of journaling. It was an act of remembering my father and sharing him with the world.

2. This is the first piece of creative writing that I’ve ever created outside of grade school.

3. My largest inspirations were the movie Gladiator, the band Parkway Drive, and the videogame Halo 3.
